A player has suffered a fatal injury on the football pitch during an Indonesian Premier League game.
The 27-year-old Persiraja Banda Aceh striker Akli Fairuz confronted the goalkeeper Agus Rahman from the rivaling team PSAP Sigli on the pitch, racing for the ball. Fairuz received a kick in the stomach from the goalkeeper. There was a brief struggle on the pitch, and Fairuz was substituted. Although he received medical attention right then and there and stayed to watch the game, his condition deteriorated on the next day and he soon died in the hospital because of internal injuries (bladder leakage).

The young footballer's death is a further blow to the reputation of Indonesian football which has been beset by numerous problems in recent years, from leadership tussles to foreign players dying after complaining of going unpaid.
Persiraja FC said the tragic incident is being investigated.
