Africa's second-biggest copper producer, Zambia is planning to review mining taxes to boost government revenue after "inadequate" receipts from the sector last year, finance minister Alexander Chikwanda has said.

Liberia convicts 13 for Ivorian raids

A Liberian court on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to life imprisonment for cross-border raids into Ivory Coast that killed seven UN peacekeepers in a controversial case.
The Liberian nationals were indicted for their alleged involvement in a series of attacks in neighbouring Ivory Coast between 2011-2012 in which they burned houses, murdered civilians and raped women. During raids on the Ivorian villages of Tai and Para in June 2012, seven peacekeepers from Niger were killed.
“I confirm and affirm the guilty verdict of the jurors. The verdict of the jurors met the law,” said Judge Emery Paye on Tuesday, referring to
an initial guilty judgment given last week and confirmed on Tuesday.
Dressed in bright orange jumpsuits, the men yelled after the verdict was handed down inside the heavily guarded courtroom.
Supporters of the convicted said the trial was a political witch hunt against the Krahn group - the ethnicity of former president Samuel Doe
who was assassinated in 1990, sparking a 14-year civil war.
Current Liberian President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was imprisoned under Doe and is seen by some as holding a grudge against his supporters.

UNBELIEVABLE: Top Oslo Imam Involved In Axe Attack While Returning From Mosque

The imam of Oslo's main mosque, Nemat Ali Shah, was reported to have been attacked with axe by unknown assailant as he returned home from the Central Jamaat Ahle-Sunnat mosque in the centre of the Norwegian capital late on Monday.
AFP reports that the 57-year-old clergyman was recuperating in hospital on Tuesday after a masked assailant repeatedly hacked him, causing him serious wounds to his face and hands.

It was gathered that the religious leader was in a stable condition on Tuesday after undergoing an operation on Monday night, and was soon to be discharged from hospital. 

 

Police on the matter told newsmen on Tuesday that they were treating the attack as a murder attempt, but stressed that they did not yet know whether the attack was a hate crime carried out by anti-Islamic extremists, or somehow tied up to his position at the mosque. 

 

"It is too early to say anything about it,"  Grete Lien Metlid, head of the violent and sexual crimes unit at the Oslo police said in a press conference. "It may be a hate crime, but we have no evidence to say anything more about that now, or about whether the attack was linked to his work as an imam."

Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha who made his intention of running for President in 2015 Election earlier this year has proudly said that if given the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC he will defeat President Jonathan at the polls.

Governor Okorocha who said in March that electing an Igbo as the next president could be the answer to the problems in the country is confident that with his achievements in Imo state in the last three years would help him in defeating the President Jonathan while saying he would fix the country the manner he had fixed the state.

 

The Governor who described himself as an unconventional governor while clearing the air on the report that he has dumped his presidential ambition said: “If I am going to contest for president in 2015, then my one term ends. If I am going to contest for president in 2019, then it is better to face what I am doing".

An Australian woman was on Wednesday,11 June, 2014 sentenced to six years imprisonment for deliberately poisoning her four-year-old daughter with cancer drugs.

It was gathered that the woman pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm in what Judge Tony Rafter called “an incomprehensible breach of trust”.
“You must have been aware of the serious harm you were causing to your daughter,” the judge said in sentencing her.

19-Year-Old Schoolgirl Prostitute Found HIV Positive

A South African woman who started prostituting from age 13 up to 19 for R50 (N760) has tested a HIV-positive, the Durban Regional Court heard on Monday.
IOL.co.za reports that the 19-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is currently completing Grade 10 in South Africa.
“No, I'm not taking drugs. I'm taking tablets for TB and for Aids,” the teenager said while she was being cross-examined by Arnand Nepaul, for Dr Genchen Rugnath.
Investigators found out that the victim might have contacted the virus while she was involved in commercial sex at a brothel run by Sandile Patrick Zweni, Rugnath, Rugnath's wife Ravina, Nonduzo Dlamini, and Bhabha Dubazini.
It was reported that all the accused pleaded not guilty to 156 charges, including assault, rape, sexual exploitation of a child, and racketeering. They each have their own lawyers.
